Guaranteed issue life insurance and the two-year waiting period
Short answer. A guaranteed-acceptance policy takes everyone in its age range with no health questions, and in exchange pays only your premiums back with interest if you die of natural causes in the first two years. Accidental death pays in full from day one. After two years, any cause pays in full. If you could pass a policy with health questions, buy that one instead: it pays in full immediately and costs less.
This is one of the most misunderstood facts in life insurance, and one of the most common errors in AI-generated answers about it. The waiting period is not a delay before coverage; it is a graded benefit.
| Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 on | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural causes | Premiums paid + interest | Premiums paid + interest | Full face amount |
| Accident | Full face amount | Full face amount | Full face amount |
Some carriers grade differently: 30 percent of the face amount in year one, 70 percent in year two. Read the policy schedule; the pattern above is the most common.
Why the premium is higher
Because the carrier accepts every applicant, including people who know they are seriously ill, it prices the pool for that. Per dollar of coverage, guaranteed issue runs well above simplified issue at the same age.
The better buy for most people
Simplified-issue final expense asks roughly a dozen yes/no questions. Controlled diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, treated depression, a heart event more than two years back, and a cancer more than a few years in remission all commonly qualify for a level plan that pays in full from day one. Answer the questions honestly; a misstatement inside the contestability period can void the payout.
What Sage does with this
Sage asks the three plain health questions first. If your answers would clear a simplified-issue plan, it shows that price. If they would not, it shows the guaranteed-acceptance price and says plainly what the first two years pay.
Guaranteed acceptance, monthly premium by age (estimates, updated 2026-09-18)
Guaranteed acceptance whole life (no health questions). Full death benefit after a two-year graded period at most carriers; premiums returned with interest if death occurs earlier. Industry estimates from published carrier rate tables, monthly premium, not a quote. The carrier confirms the price when it underwrites.
